Beg, Borrow & Steal

ABOUT TIME & SPACE

Time & Space is a small event series featuring a combination of artists and creative thinkers. Named for the armchair discussions that drive what we do as creatives, Time & Space events feature a playful theme chosen for a small group of engaging presenters and panelists. The evenings are meant to be at once charming, light, philosophical, and confessional – diving into people we admire and their fascinating personalities in an environment that inspires intimacy and conversation.

NO. 3 — Beg, Borrow & Steal
JANUARY 18, 2017

Beg, Borrow & Steal is a discussion aimed at exploring perspectives regarding intellectual property, inspiration, and the free movement of ideas.

Beg, Borrow & Steal concerns itself with the tumultuous relationship between creator and curator — the rise of information, the reaches of remix culture, and the evolution of originality. It is a complex topic, and often a bit of a taboo, and we've set out to engage in it with levity.

Youth cultures like hip-hop and street art have been challenging the notion of ownership for decades. The internet’s digitization of media and information introduced the question of who owns content. Laws treat creative endeavors with varying degrees of severity, citing everything from the utilitarian nature of a garment, or the specific chord structure of a song, to the originality of a finger swipe — just what is fair and what isn’t?

  • Felton Brown

    ART DIRECTOR
    DREAMVILLE RECORDS

Felton Brown was born in Brooklyn, like Captain America, but his parents are Jamaican, so you could make the case that he’s more like Captain Jamaica. Now that’d be a dope Marvel movie. Felton grew up loving comic books and Saturday morning cartoons. Spawn was his favorite. But instead of tracing word bubbles on the page, young Felton opened his own webdesign shop in Chelsea. His love for art and music opened doors for him to design for record labels, until Napster sucked all the money out of the market. Leaving the lush indie side to work for the man in the ad world, Felton cut his teeth at mcgarrybowen and then took his talents to McCann.
